Hydroponics
What is hydroponic farming?
The history of hydroponics
Hydroponics, or soilless cultivation, is a method of growing plants without soil. That is to say that the roots of plants do not develop in a traditional substrate but in an inert substrate. This contains no nutrients. It must therefore be supplied with a nutrient solution which provides essential nutrients to plants. But when did this method appear? Here is the evolution of hydroponics.
The Aztecs are one of the first civilizations to grow fruits and vegetables using a hydroponics method. They arranged the plants on rafts made of rushes and reeds, called "chinampas", placed on the edge of a lake. The roots passed through it to end up in the water of the lake which therefore served as a nutrient solution.
Water Conservation
In today's era, a lot of water is wasted in the fields. Did you know that farms account for 80% of water use in the United States? Field farming uses so much water because much of it is wasted. The water evaporates, rolls around and forms puddles, making it unusable. Hydroponic plants require up to 90% less water for successful growth and most systems recirculate the water and minerals used, so the only losses generated come from evaporation.
Quality Plants
Plants grown in hydroponics can grow up to 30-50% faster, allowing you to harvest more crops than when growing with soil. When you grow fruits and vegetables with hydroponics, your produce can be up to twice the size, due to the efficient growing conditions. Hydroponic plants are much less prone to disease, which means less or, in many cases, no pesticides are needed.
All Year Long
One of the most important aspects of hydroponics is the ability to grow crops year round, regardless of the season. Because hydroponic vegetable production is grown indoors in a controlled environment, it allows us to ensure successful and prosperous production without having to worry about the problems encountered in traditional farming.
About Us
Who are we?
The Beginning
Emanating from Canada, the principle of nature conservation as well as the reverence for innovation has always been something we have appreciated. The latter in addition to the profound appreciation for adventure is what drove us to move to Senegal and open our incipient business in hydroponic agriculture in the hope of accommodating the Senegalese by providing them with fresh vegetables throughout the year.
Research
After months of searching for the right location, we decided to settle down and build the greenhouse in Bayakh. Less than 10 km from the Atlantic Ocean and 45 km from the capital Dakar, this small village offers the ideal location for successful cultivation due to the abundance of winds and the high concentration of sun. Even more, the presence of an underground water table allows us to ensure a source of pure water for our cultures.
Our Team
We decided to partner with Rijk Zwaan to provide us with the best quality seeds optimized for hydroponics as well as the Senegalese climate. Rijk Zwaan, as a world leader in vegetable breeding, sells seeds while sharing his knowledge on production techniques and product sales. By helping us improve our crop yield, we can ensure fresh harvests all year round.
